1. Maisha yake

Elizabeth Murphy alitoka katika familia ya Baltimore: babu yake John H. Murphy alikuwa ameanzisha "Baltimore Afro-American", na baba yake alihariri gazeti hilo kutoka 1922 hadi kifo chake mnamo mwaka 1967. Mama yake Vashti Turley Murphy alikuwa mwanzilishi mwenza wa Delta Sigma Theta.

Mkubwa wa wasichana watano, Elizabeth alisoma katika Shule ya Upili ya Frederick Douglass na Chuo Kikuu cha Minnesota, ambapo alipata digrii ya shahada ya kwanza katika uandishi wa habari. Alitumia maisha yake yote kufanya kazi kwa "Afro-American". By 1942 she was the city editor for the newspapers Baltimore section. Married to Afro photographer Frank Phillips, she became the first black woman to be accredited as a war correspondent in 1944. Though she traveled to London, intending to travel further into Europe, she was unfortunately taken ill and forced to return home. In 1949 she began a column If You Ask Me which continued in the newspaper for the next 48 years.
